Protected Crops
Protected crops are those grown in secure structures (usually glass greenhouses) with a controlled environment.
Growing conditions can be managed helping protect crops from disease and outdoor pests. Little or no use of pesticides are required due to integrated pest management systems which in turn offer greater biological control.
Modern technology means greenhouses can be automated at different levels to increase productivity and improve crop yield and quality.
As the UK continues to look at ways to ensure food security the growing of protected crops will increase in volume.
