Three of our six glasshouses are dedicated to this much-loved, versatile fruit. We grow only the ‘premium’ varieties of tomato, and they’re usually sold on the vine.
Each glasshouse has a different mix of varieties inside. They’re grown in zones that allow us to change the growing conditions to suit the very different needs of each variety. We grow two crops a year, interplanting the new baby plants between the older plants so they grow up ready to take over production. A tomato vine can reach some 15 metres in length in our glasshouse.
We harvest around 400 million tomatoes a year in a glasshouse space that would fit more than 32 football pitches.
